A total of 64 players turned out for the Newport Club Championships. On Saturday the players out first were greeted with near perfect conditions, with the wind getting up as the day went on.

After the first day in the scratch Andy Wheeler and Steve Newman were tied on 73, with Yo Farrer 2 shots back on 75. In the handicap Doug Turner was three shots clear of the field with a nett 64, and 5 players in second on nett 67.

On Sunday the weather was a complete contrast with high winds and rain, this was always going to make the scoring interesting, who could master the conditions? The players went out in reverse order based on the Saturday score.

After a long hard battle Andy Wheeler took the scratch and was crowned the Club Champion with a gross 78, and a final total of 151. In second was Steve Newman, winner for the last two years with a gross 80, total 153. In third was Nick Matthews shooting the best gross score of the day with a 77, total 155. Andy has been a member of the club for 35 years and has never won the Club Championships before, he had it on his bucket list to do before he was 50 and did it with one year to spare.

In the handicap, 12 year old Nick Matthews was crowned champion with two solid rounds, following up a nett 67 on Saturday with the only sub-par round of the day with a nett 66, totaling 133, six shots ahead of the field. In second, 79 year old Doug Turner came in with a nett 75, giving a total of 139, and Mark Simms in third shooting a solid nett 68, total 141. Nick Matthews took the Westridge Cup for the best handicap score for handicaps 0 to 12, playing off 11. Doug Turner won the Hewitt Cup for the best handicap round for 13 to 28 handicap, playing off 15.

The McKenzie Cup for the player with the most birdies over the weekend was won by Simon Biles with a total off four birdies, just beating Yo Farrer who also had four birdies but lost out by consideration of the difficulty of the holes.
